Earlobe Repair

What it is:

It is not uncommon for large, heavy earrings to rip through the earlobes, especially if infants or children are within arm's reach of your jewelry. Likewise, gauged ear piercings can stretch a hole in the center of the earlobes that eventually will not contract when the plugs or jewelry is removed. Earlobe repair is performed to reconstruct stretched, elongated or torn earlobes and remove excess earlobe skin and cartilage to restore a more natural and unobtrusive appearance to the ears.

Who it's for:

Adult male and female patients are the most common earlobe repair patients, however teens and even children may need the surgery if accidents happen with ear jewelry. If your earlobes have been separated by a tear or significantly stretched enough to cause deformity, earlobe repair surgery may be recommended. Patients may also choose to have naturally long, detached earlobes reduced in size with earlobe surgery.

How it works:

Earlobe repair surgery is a quick outpatient procedure that typically requires only local anesthesia. Extra skin and cartilage is excised, or surgically removed, from one or both earlobes to create clean edges, and the incisions are sutured closed. There is no downtime after earlobe repair surgery, however patients may experience minor swelling and discomfort for a few hours or days.

A dressing or ointment may be used on incision sites for several days after earlobe surgery, and stitches will be removed within 1-2 weeks. After 6-8 weeks, you will see your final earlobe repair results, and after three months, you may choose to have your ears re-pierced.
