Facial implants include cheek implants, chin implants and jaw implants that are surgically placed to provide permanent augmentation or enhancement of facial contours. Facial implants can also improve facial balance and harmony by changing the proportions of facial features so that they are better matched. Common implant options include chin augmentation, cheek augmentation, and jaw augmentation.
Who Is a Candidate for Facial Implants?
Healthy, non-smoking adults whose facial anatomy is fully developed are the best candidates for facial implants. Patients seek facial implants for a variety of reasons, but in general, the goal is to increase the projection or definition of the chin, cheeks and/or jaw to correct any number of the following problems:
- Weak chin
- Poor jawline definition
- Jowls
- Sunken cheeks
- Poor cheekbone definition
Injectable fillers and fat grafting may also be combined with facial implants to provide additional volume restoration, and neck liposuction may be used to reduce fat and further improve lower face contours.
How Do Facial Implants Work?
The exact nature of your facial implant surgery will depend on your cosmetic goals and the type of implants you seek, but in general, small incisions placed through the mouth, the sides of the lips, under the chin or sometimes through the lower eyelid are used to insert facial implants while patients are under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation. Facial implant procedures may take as little as 30 minutes or over an hour to perform, and the initial recovery period is about one week. Specific post-op instructions and activity restrictions will be provided based on your unique needs following facial implant surgery.
